Anna Szilágyi

Anna Szilágyi is a linguist and expert on disempowering language. She holds an MA in linguistics and political science and a PhD in media and communication. Anna hails from a multi-ethnic background and grew up in Budapest and Moscow. After working for a decade as a journalist, she has been studying enemy propaganda, authoritarian language and the linguistic dynamics of disempowerment. She has lived and taught in Budapest, Hong Kong and Madrid, and worked with journalists and other practitioners in Europe and the US and with disadvantaged young people in Hungary. She has published in academic journals and is currently finishing a book on speech that can disempower individuals and communities. She is the founder of the global educational program “Words Break Bones”.
